The story

For three years I fed my werewolf husband my blood to keep his moon frenzy at bay, and his pack called me a worthless human. The night his first love came back, he signed the divorce papers. Hours later he was tearing his own mansion apart, and only one slap could stop him. None of them knew who I really was.

The opening pages

The day Dane Harrow's childhood sweetheart, Sienna, came back, she demanded that I give up my place as Luna of the Harrow pack.

Tonight was the full moon, and Dane was about to hit the most dangerous moon frenzy of his life.

Sienna tossed the divorce papers in front of me. "Sweetie, only my pure white-wolf blood can calm Dane through tonight's moon frenzy."

The Harrow pack raised their glasses and laughed. "A filthy human with not a drop of wolf blood, squatting in the Luna's seat for three years. She should have been gone long ago!"

I signed my name and moved out of the mansion, but I came back because I had left my ID behind.

Inside the banquet hall, Sienna lay bleeding by the pool, her face smeared with blood, pinned under the claws of Dane, who had turned into a half-wolf.

Half of the dozens of armed guards were down, and nobody dared to take a single step closer.

I walked over in my high heels and slapped Dane across the wolf face. "Who said you could go crazy in here?"

The strongest Alpha in the pack, bloodthirsty a moment ago, instantly dropped to the floor at my feet, trembling. Everyone assumed he still had feelings for me.

Only Dane, clutching my ankle, saw the gold eyes of the First Luna, and a chill seeped into his bones.

He had no idea I was the First Luna the whole pack had once bowed to, and then sacrificed a century ago.

Sienna, in a white gown, slapped a stack of checks onto the coffee table.

The great hall of the Harrow estate blazed with light.

She lifted her chin and tapped the tabletop with her fingers, her nails painted cherry red.

"Sweetie, I'm only thinking of your life. Take your money and get out of the Harrow house!"

"Tonight is the red moon. The second Dane's moon frenzy hits, it'll tear your human body to pieces!"

"Only my white-wolf blood, with its soothing scent, can get Dane through tonight!"

I sat on the sofa and looked at the divorce papers on the coffee table.

Dane's signature was already neatly printed in the bottom right corner.

The Harrow relatives closed in around me, champagne glasses in hand.

Elder Voss, leaning on his cane, let out a shrill laugh.

"Miss Sienna is so right. A lesser human who can't even shift, what right does she have to the Luna's seat?"

"For three years Dane's frenzy has only gotten worse. He must have been poisoned by the mortal filth coming off this woman!"

"Sign and get lost already. Don't sit here sniveling and shaming the pack!"

Miles took out the latest iPhone, opened an Instagram live stream, and shoved the lens right in my face.

"Hey, everybody, look! This is the human gold digger who dreamed of climbing too high, and she's about to be thrown out on the street!"

"Let's see if she crawls across the floor begging our Sienna for a scrap to eat."

"If you ask me, those checks are a waste. Break her legs and feed her to the wolves in the back hills!"

The hall erupted in laughter.

Champagne splashed across my skirt.

Sienna covered her mouth and laughed, leaning down to whisper in my ear.

"Did you hear that? Even Dane says you're a cold fish who bores him to death."

"He says every time he's near you, it makes him sick. If you weren't so obedient, he'd have gotten rid of you long ago."

"Know what's good for you and get lost, or I'll have security throw you out with your suitcase!"

I looked at her face caked in foundation and didn't even glance at the checks.

I uncapped my fountain pen and signed my name at the bottom of the divorce papers.

Then I tossed the pen aside, right by Sienna's high heels.

The metal barrel hit the marble floor with a sharp crack.

I stood, grabbed my suitcase from beside the sofa, and walked toward the front door.

The laughter in the hall cut off instantly.

Sienna snatched up the divorce papers and flipped through them again and again, her chest heaving.

"What do you mean? You dared to throw a pen at my feet!"

She stomped her high heels and shrieked at my back.

"Don't play high and mighty! Without the Harrows you're worse than a stray dog!"

"I curse you. The moment you step out that door, may a wild wolf tear you apart and leave nothing behind to bury!"

I didn't stop. I pushed open the heavy carved iron gate and walked out.

In the night sky, a red moon was half hidden behind dark clouds.

The muggy night wind carried an irritating restlessness.

I walked to the curb to hail a cab, reached into my pocket, and froze.

My ID had been left on the nightstand in the bedroom upstairs.

Without my ID, I couldn't even check into a hotel tonight.

I dragged my suitcase back along the cobblestone path around the estate and circled around to the old house's back garden, outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Inside, Sienna's boastful voice came through a microphone.

"Relatives, don't worry. This is a top-grade calming diffuser oil I mixed myself. Just light it, and Dane won't lose control tonight. He'll be completely under my control!"

"With me and Dane leading, the Harrows will rise back to the top!"

Thunderous applause and cheers rang through the hall.

Just then, a deafening crash of shattering glass came from the second floor.

Right after, a booming roar as something heavy slammed straight through the second-floor floor.

The relatives who had been raising their glasses a moment ago shrieked hysterically and fled for the front door, hands over their heads.
